Zab’s – Original Hot Sauce Feature
A little dab of Zab’s will take you where you want to go with this homage to a Florida classic.
Zab’s Original Hot Sauce
A nice orange color for this sauce that is brought out from the carrots, turmeric, and orange datil peppers. Datil pepper purists will tell you that a true datil pepper is orange and any other color is an abomination! Well, maybe not that intense, but they do say that orange datil peppers are the real deal, while reds are hybrids created over the years.
Zab’s hot sauces are a bit unique in that they come in a Louisiana-style 6 oz. bottle instead of the typical 5 oz woozy, or some variation. This gives you a bit more bang for your buck and an opening that forms an almost natural reducer at its opening.
Ingredients: White Vinegar, Organic Carrots, Water, Rice Wine Vinegar, Datil Peppers, Organic Garlic, Organic Onion, Sea Salt, Black Pepper, Turmeric, Spices, Xanthan Gum
Zab’s favorite dishes for adding Zab’s Original hot sauce: “prefer original with simple foods like meats, veggies, rice, and tacos. Also, love to cook it into pasta sauce and soups!!”
Zab’s Datil Pepper Hot Sauce Hot Sauce Lineup
Teaming up with the Original, Zab’s has their blue bottle special, called St. Augustine Style.
“Zab’s tribute to how traditional Datil Pepper sauces are made where the peppers are grown – St. Augustine, Florida. Sweeter Heat for fuller flavored foods”
Ingredients: Water, Organic Cane Sugar, White Vinegar, Organic Tomatoes, Organic Pineapple Juice Concentrate, Datil Peppers, Organic Onions, Organic Carrots, Organic Garlic, Apple Cider Vinegar, Sea Salt, Organic Brown Sugar, Garlic Powder, Organic Tomato Paste, Black Pepper, Mustard Seeds, Mustard Powder, Organic Molasses, Spices, Olive Oil, Xanthan Gum
Both sauces currently go for $12.00 for one or $20 for two on their site.
About Zab’s Datil Pepper Hot Sauce
Founded in 2019, the story of Zab’s really begins on a business trip to Florida in 2014. With no knowledge of Datil peppers to that point, that fateful 2014 trip would introduce Datil peppers and spawn the idea for someday putting together a Datil pepper sauce. PJ McNall and Miles Soboroff started fiddling with recipes in 2018 and by Q4 of 2019, they were ready to go live with their two sauces, the Original and the St. Augustine Style.
From Zab’s directly, “Our original is our twist on a classic vinegar-based hot sauce. St. Augustine style is our tribute to how Datil pepper sauces are made where the peppers are grown- a bit sweeter heat.”
Located in California, you may be wondering how Zab’s gets a St. Augustine, FL produced pepper and you’d be right to do so. Zab’s has a connection in Florida that partners with the hot sauce company to ship peppers all the way across the United States to get the authentic datil pepper flavor and heat without compromise.
As with many hot sauce makers, the creators of Zab’s hot sauce got their start in a shared kitchen for the original batches and have continued to expand out from there. Their sauce is now featured in Fuego Box and at the time of this writing, both of their sauces are sold out and only available for pre-order. Here’s a great feature of Zab’s from Courier Media.
