Man “Saved” By Taco Bell Sauce Packets
A man in Oregon became snowbound this past week and survived for five days inside his car with his dog. According to most news outlets, Jeremy Taylor was “saved” by eating a couple of Taco Bell sauce packets. What those news outlets have missed out on is that the sauce packets are pretty much worthless from a caloric intake standpoint. Thankfully Slate saw through the craziness of the story and wrote a piece about how the survival was probably from other elements (eating snow to stay hydrated, turning his car on sporadically for warmth). It is a possibility that Taylor put sauce on the snow to make a snow taco, or basically used it to help keep his sodium at a reasonable level. Either way, a fun story, but not all that based on science.
Sauce Superstore Comes to Town
Pepper Palace, founded 30 years ago, is coming to the Cincinnati Premium Outlets this month, sporting “gourmet hot sauce, BBQ sauce, salsa, pickled items, jellies and jams, beef jerky and more”
Sauce Boss – Hot Sauce Collection In Your Phone
We found out about Sauce Boss this week and were thrilled that it’s straightforward. No fancy account profiles, just ratings, reviews and profiles of hot sauces. The flavor profile spider plot shows measurements like Vinegar, Garlic/Onion, Salt, and Smoky with eight points total. Nice app and available for iOS and Android. If you’re a collector like we are, this is the perfect app for you, with no social aspect needed.
Awards Abound for the Pepper Community
At the Fiery Foods Show this past week, hot sauce makers were given their Scovie Awards, with creators like Klowns on Fire taking home seven total awards for different sauces. Roughly 100 awards were given out in hot sauce, salsa and BBQ categories. Check out the full Scovie list to learn about some new hot sauces.
12th Annual Hot Pepper Awards Winners
The Hot Pepper community hands out their own awards each year and this year is no different. With categories like Sweet & Savory and Single Pepper, the awards are another good place to learn about sauce makers you may not have known. Taking home a boatload of awards this year was JLD Hot Sauce & Knives and North End Sauce. Which of the sauces are you most interested in trying?
