When I initially told the Lady of the Farm I was going to do this recipe she said, “gross, no.” So I tiptoed downstairs one morning to see what it was all about.

This isn’t even an original idea, it’s a recipe straight from the 1976 classic “The Hellfire Cookbook” by John Philips Cranwell. He mentions how he used to eat these all the time when waiting for folks at restaurants, but I’ve never seen horseradish at a restaurant. My how times have changed.

Simple.

So simple, but not for everyone. I would be curious to see what this was like with more of a straight prepared horseradish since this was more of a sauce. When you mix it in with the butter, it gets a bit goopy which was interesting.

Chhh-chhh. SPREAD IT ON.

Rolls with butter are delicious. Horseradish in food is delicious. Combining the three is….delicious? It’s not bad but I wasn’t like “OH MAN, NEW BREAKFAST.” I’ll probably make this a few more times, but the spicy feeling is soooo different than peppers that it’s a somewhat addictive spiciness. If you’ve had wasabi in the United States, it’s essentially green horseradish, so this horseradish sandwich hits you right up the back of the throat and into your nostrils. Definitely wakes you up.

How about you, would you eat this? What’s the strangest sandwich where other people scoff and say “no, gross”?
