Torchbearer Sauces – Son of Zombie Wing Sauce Feature

Torchbearer Sauces is one of the first sauce companies we saw as a small batch maker and we said “we want to be like them.” The art style is a lot of fun, and the flavor profiles are way out there. Most sauces are low in sodium and none have xantham gum, but the sauces are still pretty thick. Accidentally Healthy, Intentionally Delicious adorns each bottle to remind folks that health is just a side effect of their sauces.

Featured in Season 6 of Hot Ones, Torchbearer Sauces Son of Zombie Wing Sauce sat at the Number 4 spot. It still boasts Ghost Peppers and Habaneros, but those are hidden amongst a host of other ingredients including honey, brown sugar, diced tomato and mandarin oranges. Full ingredient list: honey, apple cider vinegar, tomato paste, water, garlic, ghost pepper, habanero, distilled white vinegar, brown sugar, canola oil, lemon juice, molasses, mandarin orange, diced tomato, carrots, mustard powder, turmeric, garlic powder, onions, salt, crushed red pepper, white sugar, chili powder, oregano, black pepper.

An ingredient list boasting so many ingredients may be a bit confusing to some, but this is one that we believe has the most ingredients for Torchbearer. They’ve got a lot of strange concoctions and we were gifted one of their 8 packs earlier this year. Previously we tried out their Reaper Evil, which was mostly reaper peppers and some garlic. I was surprised with how quickly I made it through that one, but garlic-heavy seems to be a trend for them.

Son of Zombie is a gentler take on Zombie Apocalypse and has a very honey forward flavor. The ghost pepper and the habanero hide a bit when you first hop in, but start to pick up on your tongue and then creep into the back of your mouth. There’s an interesting combo of flavors and you definitely don’t pick up on all 25 of the ingredients, but overall this is a good wing sauce.

Great on chicken and fine off a spoon, Son of Zombie hangs around as a softer punch to the face than many would think it to be. Most folks will be able to handle the heat of this one, so get your vegetable intake for the day and try out some Torchbearer Sauces.

Torchbearer has one of the largest selections of “super hot” sauces on the market which is another reason we’ve really enjoyed their brand and sauces. The ability to make a super hot can sometimes be great just showing off the pepper, but they definitely mess around with all sorts of extras, but Carrots, Mandarin Oranges, and Tomatoes tend to show up in a lot of them.

Based out of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, the company was founded by three friends that just happened to slap together some habanero preserves and ended up enjoying it quite a bit. From there things took off and they now have a line of 10+ hot sauces and a handful of non-hot sauces including, yes, more garlic sauces including “Oww My Garlic,” a Honey Garlic suace, a couple horseradish sauces, BBQ sauces, and honey mustard sauce. Some come in 12 oz bottles, while other come in five ounce bottles, with prices ranging from $6-ish up to $20 (for Reaper Evil). This summer they will be wandering about at Pennsylvania festivals, so if you’re in the area be sure to check them out!
