Siam Orchid – Spiciest Dish in Columbus Series

These noodles aren’t so crazy after all…

Our first Thai spot in Columbus, we wandered off to Siam Orchid this week to test out some of their “hot” menu items.

We’ve been to Siam Orchid quite a bit, especially when we were searching for a Thai restaurant in the northwestern part of Columbus. It marks itself as “Thai Cuisine & Chinese Standards Served In An Exotic, Asian-themed Dining Room.” and pulls that off pretty nicely. This was the first time we’d gone in search of a spicy dish, so we were curious how it would stack up to some of the other Asian restaurants we’d been to. Determining which dish to get that is their spiciest is tough, because many items have “hot” next to the name on their menu.

I eventually settled on the Crazy Noodles for myself and the lady of the farm got her standard massaman curry and a side of the curry puffs. Thai Orchid is a reliable place to get takeout, especially when most other spots are closed for a holiday. The interior is dimly lit, but creates for a nice atmosphere and a location that would be good for a first date, dinner with the family, anything really.

It’s tough to make the Crazy Noodles dish look appealing, after all it’s a mashup of “Stir-fried fresh rice noodles with tender white meat of chicken, onions, green peppers, mushrooms, bamboo shoots with Thai chili paste and holy basil.” We also got it as takeout, so some of the attractiveness of the photo is on us.

Initially I asked about the different levels of heat. On a scale I want to snag the hottest one for the sake of consistency. At Siam Orchid there appears to be 5 levels: No heat, mild, medium, a little hot, hot. I was told the Crazy Noodles are already at the highest level of heat, so I went with that and prepared myself. Without hesitation the lady of the farm took the first bite. She wandered back to her curry and asked, “are you sure they gave you their hottest level?” I assured her I had asked for the hottest level, but whether or not they gave it to me, we’ll never know. Either way, it wasn’t a good sign for the Crazy Noodles.

The first thing I noticed is that the size of these noodles are huge. No strips of noodle here, but big ol’ sheets of noodles, almost like they forgot to cut them up. After a few bites, I could tell why the lady of the farm was concerned they hadn’t given me the correct heat level. There was nothing there. No heat, just the noodles and accompanying ingredients. This one is a no-brainer to the bottom of the list of spiciest dishes in Columbus, but with so many of their items saying “hot” next to it, I’m curious if there are some that would crank up the spiciness. Be prepared to add your own sauce to this one.

The massman curry is pretty standard, but flavorful and a consistently good option. The curry puffs, shown above, are a flavorful appetizer. A flaky outer shell, packed with curry flavor, white onions, chicken and potatoes.

While it may not have the spiciest dish, we continue to head to Siam Orchid once a month on average and recommend giving it a shot. I’ll continue trying some of their “hot” items to see if any stand out and will update this post if so, but for now, don’t head here with visions of spice monsters.

You can find Siam Orchid at  7654 Sawmil Road, Dublin Ohio, 43016.
