Ramen, ranch and hot sauce … sommeliers?

Welcome back to another edition of Hot Sauce News, the best in spicy, saucy and peppery news! Each Tuesday and Fiery Friday we reveal the best headlines from around the hot sauce world. If you enjoy yourself, be sure to subscribe to our newsletter.

Hottest Ramen For A Good Cause

We’ve mentioned Culley’s World’s Hottest Ramen several times before, but now the Heatonist is putting on an entire event around the insanely spicy dish. On March 26, Ramen challengers will meet at Brooklyn Brewery to face off 59 other challengers. Tickets are on sale now and “all money from ticket and raffle sales goes to support North Brooklyn Angels, who work in the community every day delivering meals to those in need.” Tickets are $50 for ramen-eaters and $18 to tag along and watch the carnage.

Hidden Valley Ranch BYOC Event

If you’re the type of person that dips anything into ranch or uses it as a base for your own spicy dips, you missed out on the Holy Grail of ranch events. This past Sunday, travelers far and wide came to Las Vegas where they could bring any container of any size to be filled with ranch. Event-goers saw kiddie pools, buckets, those tall drink glasses seen in Vegas, and even a beer helmet get filled to the brim with ranch. “If it can be filled by ranch, it will be filled by ranch.” Look for a similar event next year on National Ranch Day.

If Honey Has Sommeliers, Why Not Hot Sauce?

This week we read a feature (mostly about honey) in The Week, where Jason Wilson posits that hot sauce is getting to a point where it makes sense to have hot sauce sommeliers. On one episode of Good Mythical Morning, Noah Chaimberg of Heatonist was introduced as such, but walked it back to say he was only an “expert”. Wilson met up with Chaimberg to go through a tasting and it really seems like Chaimberg fits the bill for a sommelier. Is this something that’s widely needed? We all have different palates and different heat tolerances, so it’s not such a bad idea.

Hydroponics and You

Thought about trying hydroponics to get your seeds going? Here’s one method. Starting and growing out hot peppers in stacked solo cups is nothing new. It’s a straightforward concept that dips slightly into the hydroponics realm once the plant has a bit of root on it. Our very own Dr. Ryan gives you a breakdown of how to get the most out of your starters.
