5 Hot Sauces With Cultish Followings

Founder of Heatonist, Noah Chaimberg, takes Gear Patrol through five “lesser known” hot sauces that have a cultish following. While we side-eye him for choosing a Hot Ones sauce, we 100% agree with Secret Aardvark being on this list. If you’ve never tried it, the Habanero is easily in our top five habanero sauces of all time.

Taco Bell Opening Limited Time Hotel

Taco Bell has been in the news all year it seems like, from “saving” a man stuck in the snow to “saving” a man from getting hit by a distracted driver. Now they’ve announced that they will be taking over a hotel in California for a limited time. All pool floats will be replaced with Taco Bell hot sauce packet floats and customers will get a fully immersive experience. The hotel is set to open sometime in August. Is this a spiciness lover’s dream? Or a poor attempt at a cash grab?

Scientists Create Spice-testing Tongue

Have you ever tried more than a few hot sauces? By the time you get to the last one, your tongue starts to become de-sensitized to the heat thanks to your TRPV1 receptors getting information overload. Scientists have devised a spice-testing electronic tongue that can accurately show how spicy something is, regardless of how much capsaicin it comes in contact with. Pretty awesome for being able to accurately and consistently tell whether something is hot or not.

Chick-Fil-A Spicy Strips On The Way

Every fast food chain seems to be popping out spicy chicken of some sort these days. Wendy’s is bringing back spicy nuggs, Jack In The Box is releasing spicy chicken tenders and now Chick-Fil-A is on that train as well, with a limited release forthcoming in some Texas locations. The more spicy chicken options the better we say.

We Gave in and Bought Some Truff Hot Sauce

Long debated at Fartley Farms, we finally gave in and bought some Truff Hot Sauce to try out. One of the greatest hot sauce marketing campaigns of all time (in our book), but a sauce that leaves you wondering where your money was actually going. You can read the full write-up here on Fartley Farms.

Capsaicin Blocks Hearing After “Deadly Noodles” Are Consumed

This is an older video, but it recently popped up again and while we hate linking to Fox News as a general rule, the science is sound. Some foods are so hot and react with people in a certain way that it can cause temporary hearing loss. This is for two potential reasons. One, we all know snot builds up when eating spicy foods and in extreme cases this can clog the ear canal, giving the illusion that you’ve gone deaf. The other reason is that it could be stimulating the trigeminal nerve (handles motor functions in the face) and can reduce blood flow to the cochlear nerve, also simulating hearing loss. Careful out there!
