Crazy Jerry’s – Mustard Gas Hot Sauce Feature

Mustard? Check. Extract…oof, check. Crazy shirt? Check. Crazy Jerry? Check.

Crazy Jerry’s Mustard Gas

While delivering sauce to Jungle Jim’s last month we found this throwback and had to get a bottle of Crazy Jerry’s Mustard Gas. I first remember trying this hot sauce as a young lad in Boy Scouts on camping trips when we would try to outdo each other with who could handle the highest heat, but young Ron Fartley could never have imagined eating a full spoonful of this yellow-brown mustard sauce.

Loaded up with extract, this sauce hits you hard and fast, leaving a mustard taste on the tongue, but giving way to an intense chemical-based heat from the oleoresin capsicum.

Definitely appreciate the mustard notes, but oof, this sauce is rough heat-wise. Not as powerful as Da Bomb Beyond Insanity, but not pleasant from a heat perspective and immediately starts to sit in the top of your gut.

Ingredients: Mustard, distilled vinegar, water, oleoresin capsicum, dry mustard, garlic powder, onion powder

Crazy Jerry’s Hot Sauce Lineup

Fun fact, Crazy Jerry sold off almost all of his sauce recipes to his distributor in 2018, so he’s down to two primary products. The distributor is still creating Mustard Gas, Brain Damage, and other sauces and salsas, but for Crazy Jerry himself, he still sells his Cheap Label Seafood & a Whole Lot More Hot Sauce, which is the original recipe, for $10.50 on his site.

From Crazy Jerry: “This Sauce is my baby, I made it in 1976 in my hometown Pensacola, Florida for slurpin’ oysters. Over the years we’ve found a lot more uses for it… including putting it in Gumbo! There’s no phony baloney stuff in this one, even the lemon juice is 100% juice, it’s not reconstituted (and it’s sure as heck not that stuff they put in furniture polish).”

About Crazy Jerry’s

Another Georgia hot sauce creator, Crazy Jerry whipped up his first batch of hot sauce in 1988 for a friend’s oyster bar, making him one of the longest-running small-batch hot sauce makers in the game. Today he’s got one sauce and one Gumbo Mix, but is still going strong. Previously Crazy Jerry had 35 products, but sold most to his distributor in 2018, including Mustard Gas.

As legend goes, the very first bottles of sauce made by Crazy Jerry were stolen off of the table at his friend’s oyster bar. As were the second batch, which then led Crazy Jerry to try and sell his sauces.

While stationed in Vietnam, Crazy Jerry got his idea for hot sauce after eating some awful lima beans in his rations. He wrote his idea down in a noteback and would later find that notebook and make his idea a reality.

Focusing now on the two products, Crazy Jerry and Betty Boop reside in Woodstock, Georgia.
